Charyn — Valley of Castles

Charyn Canyon is one of the most dramatic places in the Almaty Region — a 12-kilometre gorge of red sandstone the Charyn River has carved over millions of years. Its heart is the Valley of Castles, where wind and water have shaped the rock into towers, arches and ramparts up to 150 metres high. In a purpose-built 4x4 we descend to the canyon rim on dirt tracks ordinary cars can’t reach, walk the gorge floor and catch sunset, when the walls glow from ochre to crimson. Charyn is open year-round, and the drive from Almaty (~200 km) is part of the adventure: steppe passes, Tien Shan views and the silence of the semi-desert. Perfect as a one-day jeep tour or the first day of the grand expedition.
