Kaindy Lake is the most unusual lake in the Tien Shan. It was born in 1911 after an earthquake: a landslide dammed the gorge and the water flooded a spruce forest. Today the bare trunks of Tien Shan spruce rise from the turquoise surface like the masts of a sunken ship, while the crowns survive underwater in the icy cold. The lake sits at around 2,000 metres, and the final kilometres are a rough mountain track that needs a real off-roader and an experienced guide-driver. The season runs May to October. Kaindy pairs naturally with the Kolsai Lakes on a two-day route. Note: this is a border zone, so bring your original passport.
